Beaver Tail Handle Wrap
Grant Thompson recently sent us some wonderful pictures of a new yew selfbow he created and dressed it with a beaver tail handle wrap.

Hi, Jim,

I am really happy about the way the beaver tail handle on my new bow turned out!  We misjudged just a little on the size when we were cutting because the grip on my bow isn't parallel, so the seams don't quite come together at one point.  Other than that, though, I think it is just about perfect!  Before applying the tail, I scraped it quite a bit to get some of the residual tissue off the skin and we used acetone to take some of the moisture and "goo" out.

I come from a long line of Oregon State University alumni.  Our mascot is the beaver and our colors are orange and black, hence my choice of beadwork in the photos.

I gave your card to my bowyer (John Strunk) who said he was in the market for some hickory staves.”

Philip Martin recently purchased a hickory stave and sent us these pictures of his finished bow.
Phillip tells us this is his first bow made from a stave, his first recurve bow and it was made entirely with hand tools. Phillip reports that the bow is 63" long, 55# at 27" and draws especially smooth and has a sharp, clean release.

Congratulations Phillip on a nice bow!

Jim,

Here are a couple of photos of my first wooden bow;  68" hickory,  60lbs@28", snakeskin backed with a beaver tail handle.  All are your supplies. I even studied the Paul Comstock book "The Bent Stick".  I'll be ordering more soon.

Thanks for your service.

Doug Day from Kentucky recently sent us some pictures of a bow he made from our hickory staves.

Doug's New Bow

Jim,

I purchased 3 staves from you back in January, after 2 bows from the first 2, this stave hung around in my water closet until march of this year, and she really started calling my name. A few weeks later I ended up with an awesome hickory bow!

66" long
4.5" handle with 2 " inch fades
1.5 " wide limbs down to midlimb then tapering into 5/8" limbtips
1 inch wide handle
Only about 1" of string follow after several hundred arrows!

Final results : 66# @ 28"

I dyed her with rit dye,a two tone fade on the belly and diamond back skins on the back, and 7 coats of spar urethane, and a brown leather handle! She shoots a 600 gr. cedar arrow with authority and hits exactly where im looking!

I'm looking foward to working with more of youre hickory staves!

Doug Day
